Tithe map of 1804 showing the motte with the windmill on top. Behind the school two chambers within the foundations of the curtain wall are also marked.

The Bailey

This unusual arrangement echoes the original plan of the Norman bailey.

In Norman times the bailey would have been crowded with wooden buildings, almost like a small self-contained village.

It would have housed all the people and skills that the castle needed to survive if it was under siege, or if the locals decided not to help.

Follow the route below to get to the next point the Castle and Town Defences at the bottom of the bailey wall.
