The Falconer

Did you know?

The most aristocratic form of hunting was falconry. Birds of prey swooped down on other birds in flight or small mammals and killed them. The falconer trained the birds.

The term ‘falcon’ meant a female peregrine falcon, the noblest and most aggressive of all hunting birds. Only princes and the highest nobles could have a peregrine. Some falcons were so highly prized they were worth more than their weight in gold.

Nobles kept their favourite birds with them at all times, on their wrist, behind their seat at meal times and on a perch in their chamber at night.
